SOCIAL

WORK

I’m the Art Director of contratiempo which is a spanish-language cultural magazine published in Chicago.
Its content reflects Latin American and immigrant art and thought in the USA, and it has been published for almost eight years.
The publication has a circulation of 5,000 copies and it’s distributed mainly in the Chicago Public libraries, city colleges, community centers, Latin American consulates, and cafes located in the Chicago metropolitan area.

I’m also working in OneofakindSites, a boutique that I founded, which develops web applications to serve individuals, small businesses and artists doing business on the internet.

Some of my clients have been Chicago’s Colombian Music Festival, top model Patricia Velazquez, conductor of the Miami Symphony Orchestra Eduardo Marturet, Siete Vientos Publishing House, Marcapasos’ magazine, among others.

I do independent consulting in the US and South America across a variety of industries, including retail, publishing, media, entertainment, and nonprofit.

I’m involved with el sistema a movement to marry music education to social work; alternative Nobel Prize José Antonio Abreu; conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Gustavo Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra.

EDUCATION

In 2010 I completed a Master in New Art Journalism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

I hold a degree in Social Communications, major in Journalism, from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Caracas.

BRIEF BIO

I grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, and a few years ago I quit my job, sold half of my books and got on a plane headed for Chicago. Now, I live with my husband in a cozy home close to the lake and carry an ebook reader.

I worked 8 years as an art reporter in El Nacional, Venezuela’s leading daily paper. Hand in hand with interviewees such as David Crane, creator of Friends, or actors like Sophia Loren, Amanda Peet, Bradley Whitford or Mathew Perry, I grow a passion for narrating stories and conveying emotions. I also worked closely with maestros such as conductor Sir Simon Rattle of Berlin’s Philharmonic; jazz player Winton Marsalis; tenor Luciano Pavarotti and Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

My writing has appeared in national newspapers like El Tiempo from Bogota, El Mercurio from Chile, La Nación from Argentina and El Universal from Mexico, all members of the Grupo de Diarios América, GDA (America’s Group of Daily Papers).

INTERESTS

I’m interested in data-driven artwork and 3D Illustrations.

My experimental work have won several awards, among them First place in both the Associated Collegiate Press yearly contest and Illinois Press Association, and second place in The Michigan State University Design Contest.

I’m passionate about banana shakes, travel and empires. In that order.
